Dr. Cynthia B. Dillard's methodology of surrender is essentially the driving force that powered through my dissertation, and for that I'm grateful. I pondered over what it meant to surrender for months as I watched it come alive between the pages of my dissertation and in my life.

I just ordered her book The Spirit of Our Work: Black Women Teachers (Re)Member secondhand. Much to my surprise it's signed by her! And it was under $10. I feel so grateful.

I started reading this book at a time when I wasn't ready, so my circumstances rejected it. I don't think I was yet at that point of healing that this required. I reacquainted with this book about a week ago when my spirit; psyche; and circumstance were ready, and it has been the most healing. I've been using it to journal my morning pages. I took some photos for my birthday one year, and I was so in a bout with depression that I couldn’t stand to look at them afterwards. Every time I dolled up and took photos, I couldn’t stop hiding the photos. This is actually my first time looking at them since. In honor of the month of love, I’m freeing myself to be myself.

I've been doing well with tracking my reading and media this year. These are my reads for this week. These are in honor of not only Black History month but my research and studies as well.

Did I spend the last 24 hours making a miniature quilt and embroidered pillow for my art/junk journal?
I did.
I'm making a worship art/junk journal and one of the verses that hit me was Matthew 11:28. I thought about what resting looked like to me (and my ancestry): quilting, textiles, preserving, working with my hands. I've been reading Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" and bell hooks' 'Belonging' so quilting felt at home. I also hand tied it with crochet yarn for my grannies.
